Parks and nature reserves

The protected areas of Basilicata include two national parks (Pollino National Park and Apennino Lucano National Park), two regional parks (Murgia Matera and Gallipoli-Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane), several regional reserves (Abetina Laurenzana, Laudemio Lake, Pantano Lake of Pignola, San Giuliano, Bosco Pantano, Lago Piccolo di Monticchio and Calanchi di Montalbano Ionico), plus other protected areas, among them Bosco Rubbio (included in the Pollino National Park), Monte Croccia in the Gallipoli-Cognato forest, the reserve of Metaponto and Marinella-Stornara on the Ionian coast, Grotticelle in the Vulture area and Pisconi near Filiano, where cave paintings of Mesolithic can be found. In addition, there are several regional state forests and numerous regional sites of community importance and special protection areas included in the Natura 2000 network and set up in accordance with European Directives “Habitats and Birds”.
